It was created in 2006 in order to invest quantities originating from environmental compensations paid by undertakings of infrastructure or others equally impacting. The resources are invested in the creation, maintenance, and implementation of federal, state, and municipal units of conservation, in accordance with the orientation of the Federal Chamber of Environmental Compensation. The Fund is administered by a partnership between IBAMA and the Caixa Econômica Federal (federal bank). In 2008, the Fund had a reserve of R$ 350 million (approximately US$ 206 million).
